Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens” is a painfully beautiful first novel that’s at once a murder mystery, a coming-of-age narrative and a celebration of character…Owens here polls the barren marshlands of the North Carolina coast through the eyes of an abandoned child. And in my isolation, which child makes us open our own eyes to the key wonders–and dangers–of her private world.”
Where the Crawdads Sing is at an exquisite ode into the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age narrative, along with a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the kids we once were and that we’re all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature retains.

In late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the natives instantly suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not exactly what they say. Sensitive and smart, she’s lived for decades in the marsh she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she awakens to be touched and loved. When two young men out of the city become intrigued by her crazy beauty, Kya opens herself into a new life–before the unthinkable occurs.
