The Taj Mahal in Agra, the holy temple of love, is one of the most visited tourist destinations of India.

It is built on the bank of the sacred river Yamuna, which is one of the four rivers associated with the god Shiva.

The Taj Mahal, like all other Taj Mahal, stands on the bank of a sacred river and hence symbolizes the eternal nature of love.

These engineers were accustomed to constructing fortresses and fort walls from stone and they had experience working on huge scaffolds. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan was so impressed by their construction skills that he ordered twenty-four beautiful scaffold gates to be constructed in Agra.

This shows that the work culture of the Mughals extended to the construction of the Taj Mahal. There are also many Hindu mythological stories that relate about the coming of the Taj Mahal.

When the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan decided to construct the Taj Mahal, he employed the services of local workers and skilled masons from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

These workers and skilled craftsmen built the Taj Mahal with the help of masonry techniques borrowed from India and from Agra itself. The famous mausoleums built by Shah Jahan that are popularly associated with the construction of the Taj Mahal include the Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Jaswant Thada Palace and the Mehrangarh Fort.

All these famous structures were built with the help of local manpower, red sandstone and Mughal architecture.

The construction of the Taj Mahal took over twenty years to complete. A thick layer of soil was also required to be shifted to the location of the Taj Mahal.

According to popular belief, it was built on the orders of Shah Jahan, the king of Mughal India. However, there is no historical account to support this. There is also a story that the tomb of Emperor Akbar and his wife were transported to this location by Shah Jahan.

Today, it is one of the most visited tourist spots in the world.

There are numerous other structures in this prime tourist spot that have an interesting history. For instance, the Qutab Minar is a twenty-three meter high, three-storey building which was once used by the Nawabs as their fortress during the rule of the Mughals.

It has a two store house and a swimming pool that look out on the marbled courtyard. Apart from this the Qutab Jama Masjid is a thirty-one meter high, immensely strong and impressive construction that dominates the entire complex.

Also present within the complex is the tomb of Emperor Akbar, who is believed to be the founder of the Safed dynasty that ruled over the Mughal Empire. The tomb has a water tank and a marble mausoleum that are embellished with precious and semi-precious stones.

There is also a statue of Jodha Bai, a granddaughter of Shah Jahan and a lady popularly known as the Tomb of Akbar’s younger daughter.

Other interesting facts about Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal also has seven wonders that are world renowned and none other than the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar’s Tomb, Birla Temple, Tomb of Akbar’s elder daughter and Birla Temple. The Agra Fort is one of the Seven Wonders of the World standing next to the Grand Palace in New Delhi.

The fort was built by Shah Jahan, the first emperor of the Mughal Empire, who was interested in building a huge palace to be constructed for his son. It was constructed using some of the finest masonry techniques and it stands as a perfect example of Mughal architectural talent.

The fate of the fort is uncertain. However, speculation is abound that it may have been burnt down in the attacks of Partition of India.

The Taj Mahal along with the other Seven Wonders of the World has a plaque attached to it that defines its significance. This plaque reads: “The ultimate aim of the Mughal rulers was to construct this magnificent edifice that is the Taj Mahal under the dome of Agra. It symbolizes the ultimate love of the Mughal kings for their wives and fondness for their visitors.

The Facts about structure and construction of the Taj Mahal was a feat that has fascinated the whole world. It has been said that the designers initially intended to build a white stone edifice with a dome on the top. However, owing to the heat and the rains the designers decided to add a beautiful marble walled building that is still visible today.”
